BIOGRAPHY
Born in Lancashire, England in 1953, Michael Kenna graduated from university in London and later based himself on the West Coast of the United States. Known for his serene monochrome landscapes, his work is characterized by long exposures and hand-printed photographs developed in the darkroom. He is especially known for iconic series from Hokkaido (Japan), Mont-Saint-Michel (France), and early works from northern England.
His works are held in major museums worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), and the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
From 2018 to 2019, his first retrospective in Japan, 45 Year Odyssey, was held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. In 2022, he was awarded the title of Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
In 2023, his 50th-anniversary exhibitions were presented at the Carmel Center for Photography and other venues worldwide. In 2024, the traveling exhibition JAPAN / A Love Story opened at Daikanyama Hillside Forum in Tokyo and continues to tour cities including London, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
Now beyond his 50th year as a photographer, Kenna remains as active as ever, continuing to photograph across Japan. In 2025, he will hold his first exhibition in Kyoto at Kahitsukan – Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art, followed by a dedicated show at the Musée Guimet in Paris in June.
